THE FEED STORE

A one stop shop for all your urban agriculture needs, the Feed Store has been in business since 1948. This store has survived to see the sprawl approach and pass it as Chicago has grown south and west.

Did you say you were thinking of keeping chickens? The Feed Store sells chicks… and ducks… and bunnies and parakeets to name a few. Have your chickens scratched up too much of your yard? The Feed Store has grass seed as well as vegetable seeds and bird seed. They have feed for any domesticated or almost domesticated animal you can imagine. If you have animals which you consider to be pests, they have traps for catching and removing them.

Why keep this seemingly anachronistic little space? Because owner Joseph Bestwina wants to remind people of a more rural past. He wants people to know about vegetables coming out of the ground and going to the table. He wants people to be aware of where their food comes from and how much work is required to get it here. He feels that his chicks and ducks represent all the animals that are part of our food resource cycle. They are there to help us understand nature and our part in its future.
