NANCE KLEHM, PACIFIC GARDEN MISSION
At Pacific Garden Mission, Nance Klehm and a local volunteer separate worms from the rich castings they create. While the process is time consuming, it can be very relaxing. The cool, damp soil in your hands, the earthy smell filling the air and the worms quietly transforming plant waste back into earth combine to create a meditative environment.
Nance learns everything she can from observing and working with the worms. She is pleased to see how delighted and engaged people are when they learn about worm composting. Her strong connection with the worms she tends is clear. The worms “…are not a thing. You enter in a [nurturing] relationship with these beings. This is a question of continuous care.” It is encouraging to imagine people remembering a deeper connection to the soil. Nance finds serenity in working with the worms. As for the question of whether anyone can do vermicomposting, she answers enthusiastically, “Of course!”
